Jadar Lithium Project in Serbia
Discovered in 2004 in north-west Serbia, Jadar is a unique deposit that contains “jadarite” – a new lithium sodium borosilicate mineral. GEOPS had strongly contributed this successful project carrying on majority of the drilling work
Date: 2004-2019
Client: Rio Tinto Inc.
Meters Drilled: 200000
About this Project
The Jadar project involves the development of underground mines and the construction of a plant for the metallurgical and technological processing of concentrates. Expected end products are 99.5%-pure boric acid and lithium carbonate, to be used in the production of lithium batteries, the government said.
GEOPS leaded the drilling program with:
- 200 number of staff
- 11 number of rigs
- 200000 meters drilled
- 0 h lost time
- 0 injuries
Rio Tinto first discovered the lithium borate deposit in the Jadar River valley in 2004 that estimated to contain 10% of the world’s deposits of lithium, an amount equal to 135.7 million tonnes with a weighted average concentration of 1.86% of lithium oxide. Until 2020, GEOPS drilled majority of about 300 wells and processed over 200 kilometers of core at the Jadar Lithium Project. It is important to add that our company conducted this incredible job completely in accordance with Rio Tinto’s HSE standards and with zero incidents.
